Carrie Owen - Occupational Therapist specializing in feeding issues

Carrie Owen – Occupational Therapist specializing in feeding issues

Carrie Owen is an accredited Occupational Therapist, program designer, facilitator, researcher, lecturer and author in the field of feeding and related developmental needs of infants and children. She is a core team member of the feeding team and the special care nursery at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

She is embraced by families across Canada for her expertise and nurturing spirit as she provides understanding, advice and professional guidance to families on a wide variety of feeding challenges, from picky eaters to children with complex medical issues. Carrie is also a lactation consultant.

Carrie lectures at Canadian universities and leads professional workshops on feeding support and interventions. She is a published researcher in The Journal of Nutrition and Clinical Practice.

Carrie writes within her field and her articles can be found in Parent and Glow magazines. Presently, she is taking on her biggest authoring assignment as she pens an instructional book for parents, Please Eat Your Peas- The Feeding Journey.

PICKY EATERS / ARFID (Associated Restricted Food Intake Disorder)

  • Observe your child’s eating abilities and outline roadblocks to feeding and growth

  • Design an individual program to encourage your child to eat

  • Identify the barriers that make eating so hard for your child

GERD (REFLUX)

  • Identify symptoms of reflux

  • Describe how reflux (GERD) is causing a feeding refusal

  • Teach strategies to increase food quantity and variety

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)

  • Offer sensory strategies along with practical approaches to expand food choices

  • Identify methods for food acceptance

  • Set family centred goals  

NEWBORN FEEDING / INTRODUCTION TO SOLIDS

  • Certified Lactation Consultant offering breastfeeding support

  • Assist with bottle feeding

  • Provide recommendations on positioning for feeding, development and sleep

  • How and when to introduce solids

  • Guidance for tube weaning

PARENTAL SUPPORT

  • Parent networking

  • Education on infant and childhood issues surrounding eating, growth and normalizing the day

SENSORY STIMULATION

  • Assessing the sensory system of your child and how it impacts on feeding

  • Offer sensory strategies to enhance activities of daily living

  • Recommend an approach to desensitize gagging with the introduction of solids
