Christmas gift ideas that will encourage children to explore new foods
- Schedule meals and snacks. Keep two hours between meals and snacks. Limit drinking, even water, to meals or snacks.
- Offer small portions. This will keep your child from being overwhelmed by large amounts of new food.
- Provide meals and snacks at the table
- Eat with your child. They learn by modeling what you eat.
- Praise eating behavior you would like continued, for example, say “I like the way you touched your carrots”.
- Offer family foods on your child’s plate or on a side plate. If you don’t offer the food it implies that food is not good for your child. Exposure to food increases the chance of them eating it.
- Offer a preferred, less preferred and new food on your child’s plate. Your child will be more interested to sit at the table if they see something that they are comfortable with. They need to be exposed to new foods.
